Diclofenac sodium.
Description
One 140 cm2 patch contains 30 mg of diclofenac sodium.
Voltaren 24 Hour Patch is a medicated patch with a slight menthol aroma.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, levomenthol, ester gum, anhydrous citric acid, propylene glycol esters of fatty acids, polyisobutylene, styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, dibutylhydroxytoluene, liquid paraffin.
Action
Voltaren 24 Hour Patch contains the active substance diclofenac which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is specially formulated to be applied on the skin of the painful area and is used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation and swelling in a number of painful conditions affecting the joints and muscles.
Indications/Uses
Voltaren 24 Hour Patch can be used to treat: muscle and joint injuries (e.g. sprains, strains); tendonitis (e.g. tennis elbow); mild osteoarthritis of the knee.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adults and adolescents over 15 years of age: Use either a regular patch of 70 cm2 or a large patch of 140 cm2 depending on the size of the painful area.
Apply one patch per day on the painful area. Ask the physician if the patient needs to use more patches.
Duration: Do not use Voltaren 24 Hour Patch for more than: 2 weeks for muscle and joint injuries (e.g. sprains, strains) or tendonitis (e.g. tennis elbow); 3 weeks for knee arthritis pain.
Longer treatment may be recommended by a physician.
If the pain and swelling do not improve within 7 days, or if they get worse, consult the physician.
Missed Dose: If the patient misses the application of Voltaren 24 Hour Patch at the correct time, apply it as soon as remembered and then carry on as normal. Do not apply a double quantity to make up for the forgotten application.
Overdosage
In case the patient has accidentally applied several patches at the same time, remove the excess patch immediately and contact a physician for help.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to diclofenac or other medicines used to treat pain, fever or inflammation, such as ibuprofen or aspirin (also used to prevent blood clotting), or any of the other ingredients of Voltaren 24 Hour Patch.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include: Wheezing or shortness of breathe (asthma); skin rash with blisters or hives; swelling of the face or tongue, runny nose.
Last 3 months of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Do not apply to skin with conditions such as cuts, open wounds, or on skin that has rash or eczema.
Voltaren 24 Hour Patch is for external use only. Do not use around the eyes. If accidentally applied (i.e. from residue on fingers), rinse the eyes well with clean water. See a physician or pharmacist if any discomfort persists.
A brace or wrap commonly used for injuries like sprains can be used but do not use under airtight (plastic) bandages.
Effects of other ingredients: Voltaren 24 Hour Patch contains: Propylene glycol, which may cause a mild localised skin irritation in certain people; dibutylhydroxytoluene, which may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis) or irritation to the eyes and mucous membranes.
Use in Children: Do not use the product on a child under 15 years of age.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
Use only on advice of the physician before using if patient is pregnant or breast-feeding, thinks she may be pregnant or is planning to have a baby. Do not use in the last 3 months of pregnancy, as it could harm the unborn child or cause problems at delivery.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Voltaren 24 Hour Patch can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Some rare and very rare side effects might be serious.
If the patient notices any signs of allergy, stop using Voltaren 24 Hour Patch and tell a physician or pharmacist immediately: Skin rash with blisters, hives (may affect between 1 and 10 in very 10,000 people). Wheezing, shortness of breath or feeling of tightness in the chest (asthma) (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people). Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people).
Other side effects which may occur are usually mild, passing and harmless.
Common side effects (may affect between 1 and 10 in every 100 people): Skin rash, itching, reddening or smarting of the skin.
Rare side effects (may affect between 1 and 10 in every 10,000 people): Swelling, colouration and staining of the skin.
Very rare side effects (may affect less than 1 in every 10,000 people):
The skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Possible signs are sunburn with itching, swelling and blistering.
Drug Interactions
Tell the physician or pharmacist about any other medicines the patient is taking or has recently taken, including any medicines bought without a medical prescription.
Caution For Usage
How to apply Voltaren 24 Hour Patch: Before first use, tear open the sealed pouch following the dotted line.
Take out one patch and peel back the protected plastic film. Take care not to touch the adhesive part of the patch.
Use the patch immediately after removing the plastic film and apply it on a clean, dried and intact skin.
Wash hands after application or removal of the patch.
Water may be used in order to facilitate the removal of the patch.
Storage
Store the patches in the original package in order to protect them from light and moisture.
After opening the pouch, always store the remaining patches in the pouch and in the original package until the treatment is finished.
Once the treatment is finished, do not keep any unused patches in an opened pouch.
Store below 25°C.
